Root canal treatment is a dental treatment to relieve tooth pain caused by an inflamed or infected nerve.
Root canal treatment is used when a tooth nerve or surrounding tissue becomes exposed or infected. This can be caused by deep tooth decay or tooth damage as well as dislodged fillings or crowns.
You may experience sensitivity or tooth pain as a result. If the root is not treated, teeth can darken in color and the risk of developing an abscess is increased. A root canal procedure is an effective treatment to remove the infection and save your tooth.
What is Root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment usually takes one or two appointments to complete.
On the first visit, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth and then remove infected nerve tissue from inside the tooth.
During the second treatment, the root canal of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Your dentist will fill or rebuild the tooth to prevent further damage. A dental crown is required to strengthen the tooth.
