Dental cavities can cause sensitivity and tooth pain. Even very small cracks in the top of a tooth can lead to a cavity hidden under the crown. If left unchecked, decay can spread, compromising the strength of the tooth.
During your consultation, your dentist will advise you on the most appropriate course of treatment. A filling may be required to rebuild and seal the cavity, preventing further damage.
The dentist will start by numbing the area around the damaged tooth with a local anesthetic. Damaged or decayed parts of the tooth will be removed, exposing the cavity.
Your dentist will then use amalgam to fill the cavity and strengthen the inside of the tooth. Your bite will be checked and then the surface of the filling is smoothed and polished, removing rough spots.
